Barolo is an intense wine, which takes time and effort to make (thus the price tag). It’s made in Northern Italy with the Nebbiolo grape and starts off with high tannins, oak and acidity, which is why it’s almost always a few years old when you buy it. It has a deep berry flavour with a distinctly savoury edge to it, think mushrooms and black coffee (if that doesn’t sound too weird!). The combination leads to a wine perfect for dark wintery nights.
