Disembark at the Rioja station for the Viña Pomal Rioja Reserva - intense, smooth with flavours that linger on...

This is a great rioja for when you are splashing out a bit and want a step up from the cheerful half price deals in the supermarket.
At 7 years old it’s got a lot going on, rich strawberry and cherry flavours, spice, vanilla, smoke… All these layers of flavour just keep going on, long after you’ve finished your mouthful which means you’re getting more for your money, aren’t you?
All those years in oak have given it a silky smoothness which helps it slip down really easily, despite its 14% alcohol (careful!) and tannins. These are beautifully wrapped in all that ripe fruit, but still bite right at the end. It is tempting to just open a bottle and get stuck in, but I would definitely be using this rioja to enhance something deliciously meaty, probably slow cooked lamb.
